Fascia is a specialized system in your body that strongly resembles a dense, three-dimensional, spider web-like material. Fascia covers and penetrates every muscle, bone, nerve, EVERYTHING under your skin-even every one of your estimated 30 trillion cells. In fact, there is nowhere in your body that fascia is not. Not only does it give support and shape to your body, fascia disburses forces that come into the body to be distributed to the whole system preventing large forces from injuring individual parts of the body. And because fascia spans everywhere in your body, it is the only system that interacts - and can influence - every other system of your body.
Gentle and safe hands-on soft tissue therapy
During an MFR session, pressure is sustained on your tissues to affect the fascia at very deep levels. We practice the form of myofascial release created by John F. Barnes, PT. Over the last 60 years, John has perfected techniques that address not only the physical issues but also any trauma or repressed emotions being held in the fascia itself.
The effect of trauma and repressed emotions on fascia is staggering. Science has proven EVERYTHING is energy and while energy cannot be destroyed, it DOES change form. Thus, energy from physical and emotional trauma can literally become "stuck" in your fascia, contributing to contortions of the microtubules. With a tensile strength of 2,000 psi, fascial restrictions wrap around pain-sensitive structures with such a crushing, torsioning effect that often the symptoms are nowhere near the actual restriction. Over time, fascial tortions wind and twist their way in a chain-reaction, reaching into other parts of the body and causing multiple, seemingly unrelated issues. A person can have TMJD or migraines that begin in their pelvis!
The John F. Barnes approach to MFR is to sustain the gentle stretch & pressure for a minimum of 5 minutes or longer. This essential length of time affects the collagenous component of your fascia, facilitating the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: gentle, sustained pressure applied slowly will allow your fascia to elongate, releasing restrictions and adhesions and quite possibly, memories, trauma and emotions that were repressed and are now free to be fully expressed and FINALLY released. The benefits of myofascial release is authentic healing on your physical, spiritual AND mental plains.
Beyond MRI's and CT Scans
Because fascial restrictions cannot be seen on any MRI, CT scan, x-ray, etc., people have been misdiagnosed, given NO diagnosis at all or given a "diagnosis" that merely serves as a label that acknowledges their pain but offers no cure (can you say "fibromyalgia?"). Patients are told their condition is incurable, yet they will be treated with one or more medications or even surgery.
Other modalities are often tried: massage, acupuncture, physical therapy with limited or temporary results.Repeatedly going back to their therapist for the same issue becomes a way of life for some, for others it means giving up favorite activities altogether because of the pain. Some stop looking for help and live with the pain because "it's how it is" and all of these scenarios can contribute toward a downward spiral into depression. But this DOESN'T have to be "how it is." To avoid repeat of these many failures and disappointments, it's imperative to work with a therapist trained in acknowledging your symptom but who looks elsewhere for the cause. John Barnes MFR therapists are trained to look elsewhere.
Even if your current pain is due to an injury, you may well have a lifetime's-worth of smaller, less obvious postural issues that may be preventing you from completely healing or at least aren't helping you recover. MFR is not a "one and done" type of treatment, it's a lifestyle change, truly a commitment to improving your health for the long run.

Break the cycle, feel relief
Ask yourself this: How do you see your lifestyle with your current pain in 5 years? Is it realistic to expect it to heal on its own? Do you want to continually pay for other treatments that only give you partial and/or temporary relief? Do you want to continue taking medications or have more surgeries after these haven't worked in the past?

👍
MFR is RIGHT for you if...
You are tired of not feeling good.
You've stopped activities because of a chronic pain condition and you want to do those activities again.
You are ready to heal.
You are committed to consistently showing up for your sessions and participating in and outside of your sessions with self-care treatments at home.
You have a realistic perspective on how long you think reaching "fully healed" will take. (When we're talking about releasing possibly decades-old restrictions, MFR is NOT a one-and-done treatment.)
👎
MFR is NOT for you if...
You want someone else to fix you.
You don't want to make necessary changes to support the MFR process.
You are coming just to relax.
You can't or won't commit to consistently showing up for your sessions.
